Product Story

The Nguri-Uri Lurik series seeks a novel approach on incorporating traditional lurik into the contemporary landscape. The once noble fabric has faded over time, losing its charms to the modern-day fashion wave. A revival of lurik calls for a new and invigorating rhythm of composition with respect towards its soulful origins.

Parts of Nguri-Uri Lurik are woven out of fabric waste in the studio. To make one metre of this fabric, we are repurposing five metres of traditional old-fashioned lurik which are woven by an older generation of weavers around Java.

The lurik is carefully unravelled to create a fringe texture that reiterates the whole design into a more offbeat and playful balance. This slow process hints at its artisanal textile-making quality that conserves the longevity of today’s traditional lurik weavers. The meticulous design of Nguri-Uri Lurik is a statement studio piece that remains a meaningful tradition to the people.

Pairs Better With

MADE IN MBAK RELLY'S HOUSE, MAGELANG

Mbak Relly is akin to the guiding mother behind the scenes of a bustling weaving house in Pekalongan. She, alongside her siblings, inherited a whole weaving workshop from their parents—a legacy they hold dear to their hearts. The siblings worked tirelessly to uphold the spirit instilled by their parents and to maintain the beautiful relationship that is their network of devoted weavers.

Mbak Relly eventually embarked on her own path, dedicated to expanding their family's local production in Pekalongan. Her brother, on the other hand, established his own artisanal workshop while nurturing a new, younger generation of weavers in Magelang. As time flows and our partnership with Mbak Relly deepens, we hope that one day our collective work will blossom with pride for our beautiful and priceless heritage.
